Oak Staircase – Open Plan – Thick Treads
Design Brief
This staircase, situated in front of the main entrance to the property, had two important criteria 1) it had to be the main feature for someone entering the property 2) it had to be open plan as due to its position in the centre of the hallway, would have otherwise blocked viability to certain rooms.
Style
The required staircase for this hallway had to be open plan due to its position and there are two ways we can achieve an open staircase, whilst satisfying building regulations. Either the customer can have a “stub” riser or they can had a thick tread. Our customer elected for the ladder leaving a 100mm thick, solid Oak, tread which gives the staircase an air of quality and robustness which best fits the property. For the bottom of the staircase the client which to do away with an finial details, wanting to keep it as simple as possible which is why the handrail is continuous at the bottom, finishing with a handrail – newel mitre.
Materials
The hallway the staircase is situated within is very monochrome, with lots of greys and whites of various shades, and the aim of the staircase in terms of colour is to break up this these further creating a feature of the stairs. For this the client pursued American White Oak, which gives off a reddish brown colour which, in a hallway like this, pops quite nicely against the background.
