Cut String Staircase – Timber Balustrade
This minimal design of staircase, designed in a space operating as both hallway and living room, aims to break up the two spaces without creating too much of an imposition. It utilises Oak and creates a wonderful contrast between the walls and stringers, which are painted white and the cut string nature creates a wonderful contrast.
The balustrade design, with rectangular spindles and a continuous handrail, seamlessly diminishes into the underside of the ceiling. This allows the staircase to be as wide as possible and allows the upper floor balustrade to be simple by preventing the handrail from the stairs running into the handrail from the landing. The newels are also made smaller than standard and are actually rectangular in profile, allowing the handrail to run into the newel at the bottom for a seamless transition.
The staircase has a cut stringer, without returned side nosing’s and with the thickness of both the tread and riser being the same, you get a snaking line which makes its way up the staircase. The underside of the staircase is complete with understairs storage which utilises the space underneath whilst keeping the clean white lines.
