Central Spine Staircase – Walnut

For this project our customer wanted a modern design of staircase, something that elevated the space and could be visually striking for new visitors. They required somethign with a lot of glazing that allowed as much light as possible to stream in from the large feature gable window and reach the living spaces behind.

To achieve the lighting requirement for the hallway, we elected to use free standing glass which removed the requirement of large newel posts which would have otherwise been a visual impediment. This structural, 17.5mm thick, glazing is self supporting and provides all of the support for the handrail which is runs continuously along the upper edge and allows the occupant to traverse the staircase without having to remove their hand.

Probably the true feature of the staircase is the timber itself. The construction is made up entirely of American Black Walnut and the colour, in what is a white neutral hallway, stands out and provides warmth. The construction of the staircase adds to the hallway with the open plan staircase adding to the large hallway which has the staircase at its centre.
