Oak Cut String Staircase – Free Standing Balustrade

Design:

At Edwards & Hampson we developed our own modern interpretation of a traditional cut string staircase. The stringer follows the profile of the treads and risers, creating a smooth, flowing line that gives a contemporary feel to a classic design.

Materials:

Crafted from Oak, the staircase is paired with free standing glass balustrades, removing the need for newel posts, spindles or handrails. This allows the natural light to travel freely through the space, particularly important with the galleried landing overlooking the entrance.

Layout:

To balance the warmth of the Oak, the client chose to carpet the treads, softening the overall look while adding contrast. The underside of the staircase has been plasterboarded and painted white, further enhancing light flow and creating a clean, modern finish.

Timber: American White Oak
Style: Cut String (modern)
