Cut String Staircase – Panelled Newels

One of multiple plots supplied to a luxury development, This property has two staircases across three floors, with the ground floor being the middle of the three. The offers a unique feel to this property in that you enter the stairwell for the first time, but you are already half way up the stairwell. The design brief from the client was to create a traditional, somewhat colonial, feel and also marry in with the materials already in use, with white walls and Oak LVT flooring.

The way we chose to create the colonial feel is through the newel posts which have machined, inlayed panels which add to the detail in the hallway and combine well with the doors, architraves and skirting board. The staircase also has a cut stringer, which is very American in style but adds greatly to the quality feel of the stairs.

The staircase has been made in a combination of American White Oak, which combines well with the flooring as well as softwoods which can then be painted white. Using softwood for the strings, newels, risers and spindles allows the customer to save on the overall cost, especially since these materials will be painted white on competition.
