Cut Sting Staircases

Cut string, or saw tooth, staircases are a design of stair whereby the strings are cut out on the top face so that the treads sit directly on top. They are a more traditional design of staircase as they could be more without the use of a router but have seen a resurgence due to their unique design and aesthetic.

More often a feature in American households and can be typically called “colonial” design, cut string stairs have an array of different components and features not typically found in standard staircases. These include side nosing’s on treads, traditionally as a separate fixed piece, scotia mouldings under the nosings and brackets on the side of the stairs, typically with an ornate design.

On top of this, cut string staircases are synonymous with continuous handrail. This is where the handrail continuous throughout the staircase with no breaks and either has continuous newel posts underneath the handrail, or entirely self supported handrail with support building into the balustrade. Components such as upeasings, overeasings, goosenecks, volutes as well as wreathes come together to form this continuous finish.

Staircase Gallery

We have half a century of experience in producing cut string staircases and can do so in a variety of designs. We can visualise in 2D and 3D the design of your staircase as well as the layout of your handrail so all of the design can be fully planned out.

We can design your staircase in a variety of materials with different timber options as well as paint grade materials that can come pre-finished to provide you with a simpler installation experience. We also provide customisable components with options for the newel posts, caps, handrail and balustrade, enabling you to create the perfect staircase for your home.

We also have expertise in combining cut string staircase with wrought iron in what is a traditional look that has recently been breathed a breath of fresh air. This includes rectangular and oval design wrought iron bars that’s can be finished in a Varity of colours.

Modern Cut String

As well as traditional cut string we also offer modern interpretations. This includes glass designs where the glazing seamlessly rises from the steps with no viable fixings creating a clean modern finish.

These designs include the Z design stairs, where we offset the tread and riser, in the same thickness, away from the string and in a contrasting colour in order to create an interesting design. This highlights how stair manufacturing has come full circle, where such a typically old design of staircase is now twinned with such a modern look and feel.

Why not let us show you how we can blend the modern and the traditional, where we can show you in 3 dimensions what your staircase will look like.
